Fifth Round brings home medals at first BJJ Tournament!

Brandon Wesson and Johnny “99” Grace marked a day in Fifth Round History by competing at our first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament. Saturday Feb 16, 2013 the boys competed in the OGA Mundial Edition Grappling Industries Tournament at Ryerson University in Toronto. This was a huge tournament and an awesome experience for both me as a coach and the boys as first time competitors.

We have now had a full time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program at Fifth Round since end of December, with that in mind both of our athletes were going up against guys with up to 18 months straight of BJJ training. Johnny had 15 guys in his division and by winning 3 matches and losing only 1 by a mere 3 points Johnny “99” took home 3rd place.  Brandon is a big boy but some of the guys he faced made him even look small. He went on to win 3 matches and in the gold medal match he ended up losing by 1 advantage point with 1 sec left to take home silver medal.

The Team did amazing for their first tournament, a 2nd and 3rd place finish made me proud as a coach and should make you proud as teammates. Be sure to congratulate these athletes for their accomplishments and look for them along with some of our other BJJ athletes to be making a mark in the BJJ competition scene this year!!!
